The HOPE VI Program was developed as
a result of recommendations by National Commission on
Severely Distressed Assisted (Low Income) Housing, which
was charged with proposing a National Action Plan to
eradicate severely distressed assisted (low income)
housing. The Commission recommended revitalization in
three general areas: physical improvements, management
improvements, and social and community services to address
resident needs.
There are four types of HOPE VI grants
available: Demolition, Revitalization, Main Street and
Planning. The grants can specify that monies be designated
for not only developing new mixed income housing but
also community and resident supportive services.
The Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA)
is an active participant in the HOPE VI grant program.
As of December 2005, CHA has been awarded four (4) HOPE
VI revitalization grants and one (1) HOPE VI demolition
grant. Through partnerships with federal and local government,
non-profit agencies and the private sector, CHA has
been able to leverage the dollars to provide a full
menu of improvement to each of the revitalized communities.
Monies have been dedicated to services such as:
- HOPE VI Family Self Sufficiency Program
- HOPE VI Homeownership Institute
- Home Ownership - Mortgage Assistance
- Carole A. Hoefener Community Services Center
CHA is clearly making a difference in
the quality of life for its residents and the community
as a whole with the assistance of the HOPE VI grant
program.
