Self- Sufficiency

The purpose of our family Self-Sufficiency program (FSS) is to provide an opportunity for families to achieve economic independence by providing training and housing to enrolled participants. Ultimately it’s to help individuals get on their feet and out of subsidized housing.

Since 1993, CHA’s self-sufficiency programs have helped 973 families move out of public housing

Some of the services provided to families include:

  • Child care
  • Transportation necessary to receive services
  • Remedial education
  • Job training and preparation
  • Substance abuse treatment and counseling
  • Training in homemaking and parenting skills
  • Training in money management
  • Training in household management
  • Other services and resources appropriate to assist eligible families to achieve economic independence and self-sufficiency.

Several of these services are provided by our partners in the community.

How it Works

We work directly with the appropriate supportive services and case managers who help us to evaluate each resident’s strengths, needs and aspirations and assist in outlining short and long-term goals for the program.

The FSS Program is 5 years in length and is available to all assisted housing and Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) residents and individuals on the waiting lists who meet the selection criteria and show motivation. Residents who participate in our program are given the opportunity to improve their skills while living in a unit that has been designated for the program. The expectation is that program participants will no longer need housing subsidies after the completion of the program.
