Resident Safety

The Charlotte Housing Authority's Resident Safety Department exists to provide safe housing for all residents. Some of the goals and objectives of the department are:

  • To investigate, track and prevent crimes or reports of crimes in CHA communities
  • To provide CHA residents with crime prevention measures and methods to empower them to own their communities
  • To provide referral assistance to victims of crime
  • To provide comprehensive information and resources to the residents pertaining to crime prevention, and fire safety and prevention

The CHA Resident Safety Department has works very closely with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). CMPD regularly provides crime data our staff, meets with CHA staff to assist with the development of preventative measures and has a well established presence in our communities. CMPD also has a full-time officer assigned to the CHA staff and has a live-in officer at some of our some of our communities that are designated elderly and disabled.

Some of the crime and drug prevention measures that have been undertaken by our resident safety group are as follows:

Crime Stopper Reward Program - Rewards residents with rent adjustments/ credits for providing valid information about criminal activity in CHA communities.

Tenant Patrol - Increases resident involvement in crime control and enhances safety and security at CHA communities.

Operation I.D. - Assists residents with engraving their private property so that it can be more readily identifiable if lost or stolen.

Crime Prevention Workshops - Provides a platform for questions and answers in order to enhance self help and socialization skills as well as increases community involvement and awareness.

Domestic Violence Workshops - Provides victims of domestic violence with the tools necessary to prevent future domestic violence acts.

Fire Prevention - Provide residents with the tools necessary to prevent fires and act properly if there is a fire.
